A Mafia Boss Walked Into A Dying Bakery With A Starving Baby — Then The Poor Baker He Hired Became The Only Person Who Could Save His Family.

PART 9

Her shoulder was bandaged, her arm supported in a sling, and winter sunlight fell across the blanket.

Adrian sat beside the window holding Luca.

He was wearing a wrinkled white shirt with the sleeves rolled to his forearms. His beard had grown unevenly, and exhaustion darkened the skin beneath his eyes.

Hannah had never seen him look less powerful.

She had never seen him look more human.

“You’re terrible at sleeping,” she said.

Adrian stood so quickly that Luca startled.

“You’re awake.”

“So is everyone else now.”

He came to the bed.

Luca reached toward her, opening and closing his hands.

Hannah’s eyes filled.

“Is he all right?”

“Dr. Bennett has examined him eleven times.”

“Eleven?”

“I requested twelve. He refused.”

She smiled.

Adrian carefully placed Luca against her uninjured side.

The baby settled immediately.

For several minutes, neither adult spoke.

Then Hannah looked at Adrian.

“What happened to Marcus?”

“He’s alive. He and the others were transferred into federal custody this morning.”

“You called the authorities?”

“I gave them everything Victor collected. The poisoning, the kidnapping, the financial records Marcus used to fund it.”

“That may expose your businesses.”

“Yes.”

Hannah searched his face.

“Why would you do that?”

“Because Marcus was right about one thing.”

She waited.

“I built an empire where fear looked like loyalty. I told myself it protected Isabella. Then it failed to protect her. I told myself it would protect Luca. Instead, it placed a target on his head.”

Adrian looked at his son.

“I can’t raise him inside the same machine that almost killed him.”

Changing the Valenti organization took longer than making the decision.

For decades, the family’s legal and illegal interests had been woven together through shell corporations, silent partnerships, and men who considered violence an ordinary business expense.

Adrian dismantled them piece by piece.

He closed operations that could not survive legitimate scrutiny. He sold interests connected to extortion and underground gambling. He converted freight warehouses into licensed distribution centers and placed independent auditors inside Valenti Holdings.

Some allies abandoned him.

Several enemies mistook reform for weakness.

They learned quickly that Adrian’s desire for a legal future had not made him careless. He defended his employees through courts, contracts, and evidence rather than intimidation.

It was slower.

It was also more permanent.

Marcus eventually accepted a plea agreement that guaranteed he would spend decades in prison. The missing nurse, Melissa Grant, was found alive in a safe house in Pennsylvania. Marcus had threatened her mother and forced Melissa to provide information about Luca’s routines before making her disappear.

She testified against him.

Hannah recovered gradually.

The bullet had passed across the upper part of her shoulder without damaging bone, but physical therapy was painful. Some mornings she could not lift a mixing bowl. Other mornings she woke from dreams of Luca crying in the warehouse.

Adrian attended every medical appointment.

At first, Hannah assumed he came because he felt indebted to her.

Then one afternoon, he canceled a meeting worth millions because her therapy session had been moved by thirty minutes.

“You don’t need to be here,” she told him as they sat in the waiting room.

“Yes, I do.”

“No, you want to be here. That’s different.”

Adrian looked at her.

“You correct me constantly.”

“Someone has to.”

“I employ thousands of people.”
