She Pointed a Shotgun at Twenty Armed Men — Then the Most Dangerous One Said Just One Unexpected Word.
PART 4
Dominic arrived alone.
Three vehicles pulled into the parking lot, but only he stepped out.
He wore a dark coat over a plain shirt. No visible weapons. No blood. Nothing except a man who appeared to have spent the last three months learning how to become someone who could help without destroying.
Kayla unlocked the diner.
“You came alone.”
“My men are handling the paperwork.”
She looked toward the vehicles.
“Which paperwork?”
“The evidence showing that your mortgage transfer was illegal, that your utility shutdowns were fraudulent, and that the developer who bought your debt did so through shell companies specifically designed to hide his identity.”
Kayla’s breath caught.
“How did you—”
“I have attorneys now.”
“Dangerous attorneys?”
“Only where necessary.”
By dawn, the world had shifted.
The mortgage was ruled void.
The utilities were restored.
A criminal investigation into Calvin Rusk was quietly initiated.
And Nolan received a visit from federal agents asking questions about his involvement in the fraud scheme.
He confessed within two hours.
Kayla watched from the diner windows as he was led away in a patrol car.
He did not look at the diner.
He did not ask to see Toby.
Dominic stood beside her, close enough that she could feel his warmth but maintaining the distance he had chosen.
“Your son is safe,” he said.
“Because of you.”
“Because you stood behind a diner counter and refused to become smaller.”
Kayla turned to face him.
“What do you want from me, Dominic?”
“The truth?”
“Always.”
He reached out but stopped before touching her.
“I want to sit in your diner when the world becomes too loud. I want to hear Toby explain his building game even though I understand nothing. I want your terrible coffee and your terrible moods and your absolute certainty that everything can be repaired with enough stubbornness.”
He stepped closer.
“I want to walk through a door and see one person who does not care how much people fear me.”
Kayla’s eyes filled with tears.
“That’s a lot to want.”
“It is everything.”
