She Quit the Mafia Boss’s Life After Seeing His Engagement Ring — Then Learned the Woman Wearing It Was Part of a Plan to Kill Him.

PART 6

Two hours later, Wren sat inside a secure apartment above an abandoned printing business. Her laptop rested on a folding table. Dario stood by the window while Bram positioned men around the Voss estate.

The original operation would have ended with blood. Wren designed another kind of attack. She scheduled encrypted evidence packages for simultaneous release. If she failed to enter a cancellation code every fifteen minutes, the documents would automatically reach journalists, attorneys, federal oversight officials, and selected members of the Chicago crime commission.

Grant Voss would lose every place to hide.

At 6:12 a.m., Wren’s phone rang. Sabrina Voss’s name appeared on the screen. Dario looked at her. Wren answered on speaker.

“Hello, Sabrina.”

“Wren, thank God.” Sabrina’s voice trembled. “My father has gone insane. Marchetti says Dario survived. There are armed men everywhere.”

“You selected Crescent Security.”

A pause followed. “My father told me it was necessary.”

“You placed federal agents outside Dario’s private suite.”

“I was trying to protect myself.”

“By helping them destroy him?”

“You don’t understand what it’s like being Grant Voss’s daughter.”

Wren looked at Dario. His face showed nothing. “Then explain it,” Wren said.

“My father made the agreement after the Bureau threatened him with life in prison. He promised them Dario, the commission, everyone. He said the marriage would give us immunity.”

“And the attack at the pier?”

“I didn’t know about it until tonight. Marchetti changed the plan. He said Dario had become too suspicious.”

“Why are you calling me?”

“Because my father is leaving. He’s taking the evidence and running. Marchetti says they’ll blame the pier shooting on Dario’s own men.”

Wren began typing. “Where are they going?”

“I don’t know.”

“Sabrina.”

A sob came through the speaker. “There’s an airfield outside Rockford. My father keeps a plane there.”

Dario reached for his coat. Wren caught his wrist. “Sabrina,” she said, “go to the front gate alone. Bram Delaney will meet you. Do exactly what he says.”

“What will Dario do to me?”

Wren looked at the man beside her. “That depends on what you do next.”

The call ended. Dario’s eyes remained on Wren’s hand around his wrist.

“You’re not going to that airfield,” she said.

“Voss is escaping.”

“He wants you to follow him. The pier failed, so this is the second trap.”

“Then what do you suggest?”

Wren turned her laptop toward him. On the screen was a live map of Grant Voss’s aircraft.

“He isn’t flying to safety. He’s flying directly into the truth.”
