SHE WAS HIRED TO COMFORT A DYING MAFIA BOSS—THEN A STRAY CAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Chapter 12: The Reckoning

Guards dragged Bianca and Oscar to the great sitting room, waking the whole house. Finn came running barefoot down the hallway, panic in his eyes at the sight of his wife in restraints — and Dorothy laid out the entire truth in front of everyone: nine months of poisoning, Celeste’s charts, the cat, Sister Monica’s confirmation, the recorded confession, the betrayal to Volkov.

Finn waited, visibly, for Bianca to deny it. She said nothing. No tears, no explanation — only cold silence, and that silence broke him more completely than any confession could have. He dropped to his knees on the marble floor as though something inside him had simply stopped.

Elias knelt beside his brother and held him. “I never doubted you, Finn. Not for one second.”

In the corner, Priscilla — the woman who’d threatened Celeste in the hallway, cold as steel for weeks — watched her son shatter, and for the first time showed the one thing her armor couldn’t hide: the helpless grief of a mother.

The next morning, Elias delivered his verdict to the whole household. Bianca and Oscar would face the law, with a full case built from testimony, recordings, poisoned food samples, and Celeste’s charts. “You think the law can hold me?” Bianca asked, smiling coldly. “No,” Elias said. “But I can.”

Finn would go to the family ranch in Montana to heal, with Elias’s promise to wait however long it took. Priscilla — innocent of everything — was told she could stay; she wept in front of Elias for the first time in her life, disbelieving that the stepson she’d been cold to for twenty years would forgive her when he had every reason not to. Dorothy called Cain Volkov herself: “The traitor in my house has been caught. Every arrangement she promised you is void. The Cade family is not weakened. Don’t try again.”
