She Was Humiliated and Fired While Pregnant — Then the Most Feared Man in Chicago Arrived and Revealed She Was Carrying His Heir.

PART 7

The drive back took eighteen minutes. It felt like eighteen years.

Damian’s convoy tore north through the rain while Silas tried, and failed, to reach the security team left behind. Elena sat beside him with both hands cradling her stomach.

“You’re not going in first,” he said.

“It’s my home too.” The words left her before she could stop them, and neither of them mentioned it.

By the time they reached the gates, backup power had restored the exterior lights. Two guards lay unconscious but breathing. Smoke from a device planted in the ventilation had flooded the control room. The east suite had been torn apart — clothes on the floor, drawers emptied, the mattress sliced open.

“They were looking for the card,” Elena said.

“Salvatore’s men knew exactly which sensors to disable.”

Silas arrived with a tablet. “We recovered part of the feed. Salvatore came in during the outage on a medical transport. The gate accepted an emergency authorization — issued from Dr. Reyes’s account.”

Elena called the doctor. No answer. A text arrived seconds later.

*Elena, I need your help. They have my husband.*

An address followed — an abandoned freight terminal near the river.

Damian took the phone. “You are not going.”

“If Salvatore wants the ledger, he needs me alive.”

“He might not intend to keep you that way afterward.”

“If we ignore this, Dr. Reyes and her husband die.”

“I’ll send men.”

“And he’ll see them coming.”

“You promised to do this differently,” she said.

“Differently doesn’t mean using you as bait.”

“Then we bring in Claire Whitfield.”

He called her within the hour, and the estate turned into a command center overnight — federal agents pulling traffic camera footage, a tactical team preparing to move in through an adjacent warehouse. Elena told Claire about the encrypted account.

“If I don’t enter a new password every twelve hours, the files automatically go to your office, three news outlets, and every board member at Cross Logistics.”

“You built a dead man’s switch?” Claire asked, eyebrow raised.

“I lived alone hiding from organized criminals for six months. I got cautious.”

Damian looked almost proud.

The plan was simple. Elena would carry a laptop appearing to hold the only accessible copy of the ledger. A microphone would be sewn into her coat lining. Agents would move once Dr. Reyes and her husband were located.

Damian argued against it until Elena took his face in both hands.

“I spent six months running because I believed fear was the only thing keeping our daughter safe,” she said. “I won’t teach her that fear gets to make every decision for her.”

“What if I lose you?”

“Then trust me enough to let me help save myself.”

At midnight, she walked alone into the freight terminal.
