A Billionaire’s Fiancée Kidnapped The Woman He Trusted Most — Then He Discovered The “Maid” She Hated Was The Only Person Who Saved His Empire.

PART 6

Search teams spread through Westchester County and neighboring towns. Volunteers gathered at the Briar Glen fire station. Ruth Harper appeared on television holding a photograph of her daughter.

“My Evelyn would never leave without telling me,” Ruth said, her voice breaking. “Please bring my girl home.”

Vanessa switched off the radio.

“She always looks so helpless.”

Evelyn lifted her head.

“Do not talk about my mother.”

“Grant sent a car for her. She’s staying at the estate.”

Despite the cold and fear, relief passed through Evelyn.

Grant was caring for Ruth.

Vanessa noticed.

“You’re smiling.”

“My mother isn’t alone.”

“He’s doing it for you.”

“He’s doing the decent thing.”

“He canceled our rehearsal dinner.”

“A woman is missing.”

“He barely looks at me.”

Evelyn studied her.

“Did he ever?”

Vanessa’s face twisted.

“You think he loves you.”

“I think Grant does not know what he feels because he has spent his entire life confusing control with safety.”

“You speak about him as though you own his soul.”

“No one owns another person’s soul.”

That answer seemed to anger Vanessa more than any accusation could have.

By the fourth day, Detective Ellis had stopped treating Vanessa as a helpful witness.

The timeline did not support her story. Her SUV’s navigation history had been erased. The estate camera server showed a failed attempt to delete the garage footage. Accounting records revealed that nearly two million dollars had been transferred from Grant’s company to vendors connected to Vanessa’s father.

Grant listened as Detective Ellis explained the evidence.

“Why haven’t you arrested her?” he demanded.

“Suspicion isn’t enough. We need Evelyn, a location, or physical evidence linking Vanessa to whatever happened.”

“Then search every property her family owns.”

“We’re doing that.”

“Do it faster.”

Detective Ellis held his gaze.

“I understand you’re frightened.”

“You don’t understand anything.”

“I understand that anger feels better than helplessness.”

Grant looked away.

He had negotiated billion-dollar deals without raising his voice. He had faced lawsuits, hostile investors, and an armed robber at one of his construction sites.

Nothing had prepared him for the possibility that Evelyn might be waiting somewhere while he failed to find her.

“What are her chances?” he asked.

Detective Ellis did not answer immediately.

“Every hour matters.”

That night, Grant stood in the dark kitchen.

Evelyn’s apron still hung near the pantry.

A mug she liked sat upside down beside the sink.

The house had continued functioning without her, but it no longer felt alive.

He remembered dozens of moments he had once considered insignificant.

Evelyn waiting outside the hospital when he had emergency surgery because no family member came.

Evelyn leaving soup by his office door on the anniversary of his mother’s death.

Evelyn dancing alone in the kitchen one Christmas morning, laughing when she realized he had seen her.

He had believed her kindness required no answer because it was part of her job.

Now he understood how much she had given him that no salary could purchase.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered into the empty room.

On the fifth day, Grant confronted Vanessa again.

She was packing a suitcase in the bedroom they shared.

“Where are you going?”

“My sister’s.”

“The police told you not to leave the county.”

“I’m not leaving the county.”

Grant watched her fold a sweater.

“There was no emergency call about Ruth.”

Vanessa kept packing.

“You forged my signature.”

Her hands stopped.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Northstar sent money to three shell companies. All three trace back to your father.”

“You have billions.”

The words escaped before she could stop them.

Grant’s voice dropped.

“That was your defense?”

“My father was desperate.”

“So you stole from housing projects intended for seniors?”

“I was going to repay it.”

“With what?”

“After the wedding, it wouldn’t have mattered.”

“It mattered before the wedding.”

Vanessa faced him.

“Do you hear yourself? You’re willing to destroy me over money while Evelyn disappears with your mother’s ring.”

“Evelyn did not disappear.”

“Then where is she?”
