A Billionaire’s Fiancée Kidnapped The Woman He Trusted Most — Then He Discovered The “Maid” She Hated Was The Only Person Who Saved His Empire.

PART 8

“Where is my daughter?”

Grant caught her before she reached the treatment-room doors.

“She’s alive.”

Ruth folded against him.

For the first time since he was a child, Grant held another person while they both cried without trying to hide it.

Vanessa was arrested at the farmhouse.

Officers found plastic restraints, sedatives, fuel containers, and printed directions to a quarry forty miles away. Investigators also recovered internet searches from her laptop asking how long security footage remained available and whether rope marks could identify a specific manufacturer.

The evidence destroyed her claim that the kidnapping had been an impulsive attempt to “frighten” Evelyn.

It had begun in panic.

It had become premeditated.

Evelyn woke late that evening.

Her mother sat on one side of the bed.

Grant sat on the other.

She looked between them, confused by the tubes and monitors.

“Mom?”

Ruth clasped her hand.

“I’m here, sweetheart.”

Evelyn’s eyes moved toward Grant.

He leaned forward.

“You’re safe.”

She tried to speak, but pain tightened her face.

“Don’t,” Grant said. “The doctor wants you to rest your voice.”

Tears appeared in her eyes.

Grant lowered his head.

“I’m sorry.”

Evelyn frowned.

“I should have seen what Vanessa was doing. I should have listened when you tried to tell me about the invoices. I should have protected you.”

Evelyn squeezed his fingers.

Then she slowly shook her head.

It was not forgiveness.

Not yet.

It was simply a request for him to stop punishing himself while she was still fighting to recover.

Grant understood.

For three days, Evelyn could communicate only by writing on a small whiteboard.

Her first written request was for tea.

Her second was for the nurses to stop allowing reporters onto the hospital floor.

Her third was directed at Grant.

*Go home and shower. You look terrible.*

Grant read the message twice.

“You nearly died, and you’re criticizing my appearance?”

She added another line.

*Someone has to.*

He laughed.

The nurse near the door turned away, pretending not to wipe her eyes.

Grant stayed in the hospital each night, but he gave Evelyn space during the day. He brought Ruth breakfast, handled insurance paperwork, and contacted a trauma specialist without making decisions on Evelyn’s behalf.

He was beginning to understand that rescuing someone did not give him ownership over what happened next.
