The Mafia Boss Thought His Secretary Betrayed Him — Until He Found Her Scrubbing Diner Floors To Pay A Debt His Empire Created
PART 10
On Thursday evening, Weston left for a tense negotiation across town. Wren remained in the executive suite to finish weekly reports.
At seven forty, the private elevator chimed. Callan Voss stepped into the hallway holding a suppressed pistol, two nervous men following.
“Where is Kade?”
“Mr. Kade is unavailable. I manage his schedule.”
“You’re Wren. You destroyed my uncle.”
“Your uncle destroyed his own operation.”
“You’re sleeping with him. That’s why an old man loses everything.”
Wren studied him the way she studied a corrupted ledger. His anger was loud because the truth beneath it frightened him.
“You did not come here because of Marcus,” she said. “You came because account 449 is under review.”
His face emptied.
“The auto repair shop on Fifth. Registered to Elaine Voss’s maiden name. There were no transmissions.”
“Stop talking.”
“I have not yet shown Weston.”
“What do you want?”
“Place the gun on the floor.”
“You don’t give orders.”
“You need me alive. If I die while my audit remains open, the system sends a copy to Weston and Silas.”
It was a lie. Callan didn’t know that.
Wren moved one finger toward the mouse. Steel security shutters descended across the outer hallway. Every light turned red. Owen’s launcher fired, throwing one of Callan’s men backward. The second dropped immediately.
Callan pulled Wren against him and aimed at the doorway. “Back up!”
