The Mafia Boss Thought His Secretary Betrayed Him — Until He Found Her Scrubbing Diner Floors To Pay A Debt His Empire Created

PART 7

Wren woke to the scent of coffee and immediate panic. The clock read eleven fourteen. She had slept almost eight hours.

Weston stood beside an espresso machine, old tattoos extending along one forearm.

“You missed several calls,” he said. “I turned it off. Your sister sent a message. I replied that you were sleeping.”

“You texted my sister?”

“I did not identify myself. I said your office.”

Despite herself, Wren smiled. It vanished when he slid a folded page across the marble. She recognized her father’s name. Across the page, written in black ink: CLEARED.

“What did you do?”

“The debt no longer exists. Marcus signed it.”

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“What do I owe you?”

“Nothing.”

“You lost money.”

“I eliminated a corrupted operation. Because it violated my rules. Here are my terms,” Weston continued. “You will stop working at the diner. You will sleep more than two hours a night. You will continue doing the job I pay you to do, provided you still wish to work for me.”

Tears rose before she could stop them. Weston wiped one from her cheek with his thumb.

“Why?” she whispered.

“Because when you did not answer, the office changed. I saw you in that uniform, apologizing to strangers, and understood that the person keeping my life functioning was collapsing six feet from me while I remained too blind to notice.”
