She Arrived at the Billionaire’s Door With Nothing But a Baby and a Secret — Then an Unopened Letter Changed Everything He Believed About Her.
PART 3
The petition was a masterpiece of respectable cruelty. It described Wren as “understandably overwhelmed,” “professionally displaced,” and “temporarily reliant upon an unrelated wealthy man.” Photographs showed her entering Weston’s home at night. Everett’s paralegal claimed Wren had threatened to take Nadia out of the country.
Everett requested that Nadia live in his home with him and his wife until Wren completed a psychiatric evaluation.
“His wife?” Wren said. “She’s supporting this?”
Weston’s attorney, Odessa Ward, closed the folder. “Her affidavit says she forgives his affair and believes Nadia deserves a relationship with her father.”
“That makes no sense.”
“It makes excellent public relations,” Weston said. “Everett’s nonprofit is under state contract review next month. A forgiving wife, a repentant husband, and a baby rescued from an unstable mother create a convenient picture.”
They worked until midnight. Wren assembled medical records, feeding logs, and every message Everett had sent during her pregnancy. Weston’s security team documented the investigator who had followed her. Odessa obtained surveillance footage showing Wren leaving with a mark already forming beneath her ear.
At eleven forty, Mrs. Ferro carried a sleepy Nadia into the library.
“What if it isn’t enough?” Wren whispered. “What if he takes her because he has a house and a wife and a title, and I have a suitcase with a broken wheel?”
Weston knelt beside her chair.
“A house is not proof of safety. A title is not proof of character. And you do not have only a suitcase. You have evidence. You have Odessa. You have Priya landing in six hours ready to set fire to the legal profession. You have Mrs. Ferro, who frightens federal judges. And you have me.”
Wren laughed through her tears.
